Early on in the design process, Imagineers developed what they called the "dry cleaning idea" to simulate hang gliding by having individual seats rotate on a conveyor belt.
When that didn't work, Mark Sumner, a senior technical director and project/ride engineer at Imagineering, created a ride prototype using Erector Set pieces. His concept evolved into Soarin'.
