The 105-foot-long hull was built at Todd Shipyards in San Pedro, California. The superstructure was constructed in a soundstage at the Disney Studio in Burbank.

The Mark Twain underwent a major refurbishment in 1995, during which all the decks and the boiler were replaced and again in 2004 to repair the hull, which included replacing the keel.
