bricked up tunnel

This always puzzles guests - why is there a bricked over archway with the date 1764?

The answer to the mystery lies in plans that never were realized. Kevin Yee's book 101 things you never knew about Disneyland reveals upgrade plans for a walkthrough cavern and tunnel connecting New Orleans Square and Tom Sawyer's Island.

The "plot" being that a pirate who owned the Haunted Mansion for a time had buried treasure underneath the river and sealed up the entrance with bricks and a curse...

Unfortunately the planned update never happened, but this bricked up arch still remains...

Look for a decorative plaque up the stairway in the Court of Angels, it reads:

Mme. Sally McWhirter
Instructor

Sally began her career with Disney in the Disney Stores, Inc. in Indiana. Sally was promoted to District Manager before coming to work in Disneyland.

Here she was named director of store operations in 1995 until her untimely death in 1997.

She died at 40 as a result of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Sally sang with her church choir, which explains the plaque reference to music of angels and voice lessons.
Her tribute is near this heavenly stairway, in the Court of Angels. -- Disneyland Detective
