Story from the OC Register

Disneyland's Storybook takes constant care

Landscapers constantly work on Disneyland's Storybook Canal to keep the trees in scale with the miniature scenes in the attraction.

Tinkerbell might be responsible for shrinking the hundreds of types of plant life in the 56-year-old attraction, but a crew of two Disney workers get less than five hours a night to keep the attraction looking pristine.

The ride is a seven-minute trip via motorized canal boats past houses, castles and scenes from Disney animated movies like Pinocchio, Snow White, Peter Pan and The Little Mermaid. Guides give a spiel as the boats cruise through the ride, which is bordered by the Casey Jr. Circus Train.

Did you know that Disney officially considers the Storybook Land Canal Boats an opening day attraction when it actually is not? The attraction originally opened as Canal Boats of the World. It did not feature any of the miniature houses like it does today. Without the famous miniatures the ride went though banks of dirt showing nothing at all. The attraction closed 2 month after the park opened so a budget could finally be obtained to build and add the miniatures. In June of 1956 (11 months after the park opened) The Storybook Land Canal Boats officially opened as the version we all know and love.
